When you lay out in the sun, you tan, you don’t burn. Why? A. As I said in the video, tanning is actually a cellular mutation, specifically with a type of cell called a melanocyte (produce melanin that change color to make that tan color). That cell changing is the mutation, and just because you are tanning and not burning doen’t mean you aren’t harming your skin. There is some truth behind the “base tan” method, as once your skin is tan you are slightly more protected from further sun damage, but the base tan (as I said in the video) is damage itself. Skin burns when the cells are OVEREXPOSED to UVB rays. There is a point when your cells simply cannot process the rays in a way that will produce a tan, and therefor switch into, for simplicity’s purposes, “burn mode” and you turn red. Sunscreen will filter out some of the harmful rays so less hit your skin, therefore you skin will be more likey to stay out of “burn mode” and stay in the melanin producing, tan making mode.
